I've had my eye on cotton stems for a while now, but just couldn't pay the $8 a piece I kept seeing them for in my local shops. I usually peruse the floral aisles looking for some great faux greenery and flowers to decorate with. I came across a cotton swag and low and behold it just happened to be a week that swags were 50% off. I stood there in the aisle examining it. Basically a swag is a long decorated floral or greenery piece that you decorate your front door with by draping it around the frame. This particular cotton stem swag is $39, but with the 50% off it was only $19.99 SCORE! Of course if you don't hit the 50% off week you can slowly download the 40% off coupon on Hobby Lobby's site. I loaded it up in my cart and brought that bad boy home to start deconstructing it. All I had to do was unwrap the individual stem from the thicker "vine" of the swag. Easy peasy.
All in all I was able to get about 20 stems off of it. The "stems" are pretty flimsy by themselves, but they could be used in a variety of ways. They consist of several cotton buds attached to flexible floral wire thats been covered with brown paper to match an actual cotton stem. I had the perfect metal bucket just crying out for a cotton stem arrangement on my mantel. So I twisted a bunch or them together to create a cotton bouquet and it is the perfect addition to my mantel. You could also use them to make your own cotton wreath for way cheaper than you can buy a premade one for. I also think you could reinforce each individual stem by wrapping them around thicker floral wire to make a sturdier and taller stem for arranging in a vase or bucket. I still have a good bunch of the stems leftover after filling my metal bucket. Time to think up a way to decorate with them! Until next time!
