Hey y'all! I'm so glad that you are taking the time to read all about Our Forest Farmhouse! I have a confession to make. Our forest farmhouse doesn’t quite exist yet. Oh, there’s a place to build it, and there’s a house plan, and there are many, many ideas on Pinterest, but the actual house only exists in those places right now. So, for the next 6-9 months we will be building our dream home. Our REAL dream home. We’ve built one house already. The one we thought was our dream home. But it really isn’t. It’s someone else’s dream home. Because we made a lot of mistakes, like a lot of mistakes. Enough mistakes that I can write a whole blog post (or two) about so that you may be wiser than we were. And let’s face it, it was before Pinterest was a thing. Anyone that built a house before Pinterest should get a do-over. It’s only fair. How did we live before Pinterest?? I may have a small addiction. I also got married and had kids pre-Pinterest, but those two things are working out well, so I think I’ll keep them. The house is another matter entirely. When we built our first house 6 years ago, I had a binder full of pictures I had cut out from magazines and catalogs. You know, old school style. Fast forward 6 years and SO much has changed. Our boys have grown up, we’ve changed jobs, and well, Pinterest came into my life. So we’ve sold our first “dream house” and are in the very beginning stages of building our second (and hopefully last) one. Not many people get the chance to do such a thing, but we are incredibly blessed to be able to. So now we are about to enter a very chaotic and stressful time in our lives. Not because of the building - I LOVE that part. Like, LOVE LOVE! What many people view as daunting and stressful is my JAM! I love looking at house plans and finding the perfect one. I love choosing all the finishes and seeing it all come together. I could build a new house every year, but that would just be crazy. Plus who wants to move that much. That’s the part that’s stressful. I wish I had a moving fairy. I could just go to bed one night and wake up the next morning all moved in to a different house. Sadly, there are no fairies. And since we are going to try and make our dollar stretch as far as possible this time, there will be no moving company either. Everyone cue the violin. The house we are moving into is actually owned by a friend who has been unable to sell it. That could change at any moment, though, and we could have to move again before it’s all said and done. I try not to let my mind wander to far into that dark place. We’ll cross that bridge when and if we come to it. I try not to stress about the what ifs. HA who am I kidding? I’m pretty sure that’s what keeps waking me up at 4 in the morning and keeping me from going back to sleep. So this blog is about our journey. The ins and outs of building a house from start to finish and all of the ways we are going to try and get exactly what we want this time on a serious budget. We have a beautiful piece of property, a fabulous contractor, a kick ass house plan, and, of course, Pinterest. What could go wrong? IS there something in your life that you wish you could do over now that there’s Pinterest or some other can’t live without tool or device? I’d love to hear about it.
